<dc_description>In this letter, Mr. Norton, an orderly sergeant, tells his wife, Hattie, that he has sent her a ten dollar bill and a sketch of their camp in Decatur, Alabama. The railroad and the bridge across the river have been destroyed. The bridge across the lake has been repaired. He comments that it must be a important place to hold since it is on the extreme right of Sherman's line of operation. If it falls into the hands of the rebels, then communication could be cut off. They are building a block house. There was a July 4th celebration with speeches and a salute from the batteries. He mentions other regiments in camp and their association to one another. With hot weather, neck ties and collars are not worn. He comments that he cares not one bit about her new dress and her new short hair cut. The weather and bread baking is mentioned. He closes his letter by giving the remaining length of service.</dc_description>
