Engraved portrait of William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891), Major General of the Union Army during the United States Civil War. He is well known for leading his troops in the capture (and burning) the city of Atlanta in 1864, then marching to the sea, finally accepting the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida in April 1865. Postwar, he served as Commanding General of the Army (1869-1883), overseeing the Indian Wars in the western United States.
