Profile portrait of Orlando M. Poe around 1890. Poe was Sherman's chief engineer during the Civil War and was brevetted brigadier general. He oversaw the burning of Atlanta. After the war in 1870 Poe was responsible for much of the early lighthouse construction on the Great Lakes. The design and implementation of the first Poe Lock was instrumental in making possible the shipping industry which was pivotal to the creation of the basic steel industry in the United States.
