Portrait of Union Army generals Martin D. Hardin and Wesley Merritt. Hardin was a brigadier general in the Union Army during the United States Civil War. He was born in Illinois and his father was a native Kentuckian. He married Estella Graham of Harrodsburg, Kentucky. His military career included participation in the Battle of Gettysburg. He also served on a board to examine prisoners of state. Merritt was a soldier in the 2nd Calvary for the Union Army. He was brevetted major general in the regular army for bravery at the Battle of Five Forks and the Appomattox Campaign. Postwar, he was the first military governor of the Philippines.
