Portrait of Joseph Eggleston Johnston (1807-1891). When Johnston's native state of Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, Johnston resigned his commission as a brigadier general in the regular army, the highest-ranking U.S. Army officer to do so. He was one of the most senior general officers in the Confederate States Army during the United States Civil War. After the war Johnston spent time in politics and the railroad industry and was appointed commissioner of railroads in the administration of United States President Grover Cleveland.
