Title:Gen. John Ramsay [sic], U.S.A.

Portrait of John Ramsey (1838-1901), who was brevetted Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers of the Union Army in the United States Civil War in 1864 for "distinguished services in the present campaign before Richmond Virginia." In 1865 he was brevetted Major General, U. S. Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services during the war." His name was incorrectly spelled "Ramsay" on the inscription of this cabinet card and also on his gravestone at Arlington National Cemetery.
