Portrait of Admiral David Dixon Porter (1813-1891), a member of a distinguished family in the history of the United States Navy and a commander in the Navy during the United States Civil War. At the close of the Civil War, Porter was promoted to Vice Admiral, became the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, and was appointed by President Grant as special advisor to the Navy Department.
