Portrait of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont (1803-1865), a member of the prominent Du Pont family, who served as a naval officer during the Mexican-American War and the United States Civil War. He was superintendent of the United States Naval Academy, and made significant contributions to the modernization of the U.S. Navy.
