Portrait of Major General Francis C. Barlow (1834-1896), of the Union Army of the United States Civil War. He was born in Brooklyn, New York but grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts. He graduated first in his class at Harvard and was practicing law at the New York Tribune newspaper when the Civil War broke out in 1861. He fought in many battles and was recognized for his distinguished bravery.
