Portrait of Edward Wellman Serrell (b. 1826), a civil and military engineer and Union general (brevet brigadier general) in the United States Civil War. Prior to the war he accompanied the 1848 expedition that laid out the railroad route across Panama. He built several suspension bridges. In 1887 he became president and consulting engineer of New York's Washington County railroad.
