Portrait of Orlando M. Poe, a United States Army officer (brevet brigadier general) and engineer in the United States Civil War. After helping General William Tecumseh Sherman's March to the Sea, he was responsible for much of the early lighthouse construction on the Great Lakes. The design and implementation of the first Poe Lock was instrumental in making possible the shipping industry which was pivotal to the creation of the basic steel industry in the United States.
