"Andersonville, August 17, 1864. An elevated view of Andersonville Prison taken during the height of its occupation by Union prisoners. This view is mounted on the original board mount and is entitled, "Andersonville Prison, Georgia, North-west View of the Stockade. Thirty-three Thousand Prisoners in Bastille at the time it was taken. Photographed by A.J. Riddle, August 17th, 1864." Even though this photo is entitled taken "North-west," it is actually facing South-east. The photograph was published in 1865 as part of a series.
