(New Orleans, La.), ca. 1865. James Longstreet was born Jan. 8, 1821 in South Carolina. He graduated from West Point in 1842 and served in the Mexican War. In 1861 he resigned his commission to serve in the army of the Confederacy. After the Civil War he held a number of federal appointments. He died in Gainesville, Ga. on Jan 2, 1904 and is buried in Alta Vista Cemetery.The photograph was taken by W. W. Washburn, Photographic Artist, who was of 113 Canal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana at the time the photograph was taken.
