Gordon County, ca. 1855. George Washington Lay (left) and James Berry Lay, Sr. (right) pose for a photograph. Note their attire. During the Civil War George Washington Lay served in Co. D, 40th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry. James Berry Lay, Sr. may have served in Co. D, 8th Battalion Georgia Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.
