A number of things can be determined from this document: it is a bill of sale dated January 2, 1865 for a slave named Loney. The buyer was N. A. Wingate & Co. of Charlotte, North Carolina; and the seller was J. A. Bisaner, of Lincolnton. At the time Loney was about twenty seven years old and was sold for $6,000 in Confederate currency. Because the Confederacy was in a state of decline at that time, the value of a Confederate dollar had eroded to about four cents in comparison to Northern currency. This bill of sale also serves as a letter to Bisaner's wife (un-named here), instructing her to deliver Loney to his new masters. One thing that is perplexing about this particular bill of sale is the fact that the buyer is not a individual person, but a company, apparently owned and operated by N. A. Wingate. The only thing we can know about Loney after he was sold is that he must have become a freedman about four or five months later, when emancipation was announced in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
